The Route: Cycle: 40 miles Climb: Snowdon Canoe: Llyn Gwynant
The ‘acdc bandits’, aka Gareth Frankland, Paul Whittaker, Paul Wilkinson and Nik Gardener, are set to complete the Snowdonia Charity Challenge this July; a hugely popular team challenge set in the stunning Snowdonia National Park.
Participating teams are challenged to cycle 40 miles, climb Snowdon and canoe Llyn (lake) Gwynant in a single day, raising funds REGAIN which supports men and women paralysed in sporting accidents.
acdc CEO, Gareth Frankland, commented; “This is going to be the toughest physical challenge we have ever done – our target time of 8 hours is a long time and Snowdon is one big hill! But this is not just an incredibly great physical challenge; it is another fantastic opportunity for us to raise money for a very worthy cause. Plus in true acdc style, the Snowdonia Challenge is another way for us to push boundaries and work as a close knit team.”
Preparation is key to the success of the acdc Bandits. Paul Whitaker remarked: “In a battle to fight our middle age spreads, we are all in pretty good shape. I cycle a couple of hundred miles a week throughout most of the year so fitness should not be too much of a problem for me personally. If all else fails, we are a good team who will laugh our way round the course. Fuelling ourselves will be very important on such an endurance based course. Hopefully there are pubs en-route.” He jokes…?!
Paul Wilkinson is no stranger to physical challenges. Not only does he battle the London traffic on his pushbike daily to keep himself in shape physically and mentally, he has recently climbed Kilimanjaro and the Annapurna Himalaya. Paul adds: “I think it’s fair to say that I like my adventures to be epic. This challenge seemed sufficiently manly to temp me to participate. There’s got to be a realistic chance of failure for it to call itself a challenge.”

REGAIN is the only charitable organisation dedicated solely to improving the lives of men and women who have become tetraplegic in a sporting accident. One minute these individuals are fit, active and healthy, the next they are paralysed, unable to move and in need of support for the rest of their lives. REGAIN supports these individuals by providing financial help to purchase a wide range of specialist equipment that enables them to become independent again. REGAIN also prides itself on encouraging tetraplegics to take part in sporting activities again and provides numerous grants every year for sports wheelchairs and hand cycles.
